From Projectionist to Analyst

I worked as a projectionist at Celebration Cinema South for nearly four years before I attended the Information Security and Intelligence program at Ferris State University. Since I’ve been on a roll with reflecting on my prior experiences lately, I thought now would be a good opportunity to write about being a projectionist. What was it like? What did I learn? Most importantly, how did my experience prepare me to be a cybersecurity analyst?

National Heritage Academies Internship

Last summer, I completed an IT security internship at National Heritage Academies (NHA) as part of my bachelor’s degree requirements for Ferris State University. Since then I’ve also earned two certifications, graduated, and launched this blog/portfolio site. Now I have a little time to breathe while I search for an entry into the cyber industry, so I think this is the perfect time to reflect on my internship experience. I’ve recorded the details I remember and that I thought were worth sharing in this post.

Cyber Competition Experiences

I participated in at least six cybersecurity competitions during my time as an ISIN student at Ferris State University. Now that my degree is finished, I thought it would be a good idea to record what I remember from the experiences.

Apart from being a healthy thing to do, reflection is also a core analyst skill. Knowing how best to “make it mean something” after you finish a competition, certification, or other cyber engagement will give perspective to your experiences. Recording what happened or creating something like a lessons learned writeup can also benefit your peers and future analyst collaborators, so I feel grateful that the ISIN program reinforced this habit.
